Woodward Group’s continual evolution has enabled us to supply High Voltage (HV) private network installations up to 11kV, transformers, 11kV cabling and packaged solutions.
Our expertise allows us to provide a full project design service, project management, installation of transformers, protection systems, substations and switchgear.
In addition, we deliver fault diagnosis and planned preventative maintenance schemes as well as cable diversions, cable jointing, tracing cables, excavation and back filling.
HV switchgear and transformers are incredibly reliable but requires regular servicing and maintenance. Should fault arise, it could be tremendously disruptive, expensive to repair, and dangerous. Woodward Group offers a complete maintenance package for your high voltage private network.

Woodward Group has a long-standing working relationship with the Bombardier transportation site in Derby predominantly undertaking maintenance works and compliance testing for the company. This year, we completed the largest installation project, to date, with the Derby-based firm.
The project centred around the transformation of 2 assembly bays that were to be refurbished to suit the bespoke requirements of the Crossrail carriages. Involvement was required from steel workers, civil engineers, structure engineers, mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers with Woodward Group undertaking the electrical aspects of the project. Co-ordination was key throughout the project as timescales were short and with workers being undertaken below and above floor level, the planning was key. Woodward Group worked closely with Bombardier and the other contractors on site to ensure programmes were adhered to and designs were checked throughout to ensure errors were eliminated prior to installation.
The project began with the strip-out phase where we disconnected the existing installation whilst maintaining temporary power onto vital equipment. These works enabled other trades to progress during the project prior to our installation phase. Secondly, we installed approximately 360 metres of 400A Zucchini bus-bar trunking (180 metres per bay) with 95mm 4C XPLE parallel supplies from the LV switch room with all associated containment. The majority of the installation was undertaken at height with the use of MEWPS and all of our employees are IPAF accredited.
Upon completion of the ground works and support steels in place we split our team between the ground and high level works to ensure the project was pushed on and deadlines were met. High level works included new Eaton LED lighting scheme achieving an average of 500LUX throughout and an emergency lighting scheme compliant to BS5266:2016. Data cabling and heating supplies were also installed at high level. Low level works consisted of 400V and 110V distribution boards, 400V, 230V and 110V power feeding equipment specific to the assembly.
We successfully completed the project on time, within budget and all final testing and commissioning completed with no issues or alterations. This was undeniably confirmed when the NICEIC earmarked the works to be audited for our NICEIC Approved Contractor annual renewal. The inspection found that there were NO non-conformities.
The relationship between Bombardier and Woodward Group is at an all-time high especially as Woodward Group are looking to carry out the same works on an additional 3 assembly lines.
We would like to thank the Bombardier Team for their professionalism, co-operation and confidence to entrust Woodward Group with such critical projects.
From an early age, I had a great mentor working on industrial and commercial electrical installations throughout the Midlands who taught me the importance of planning carefully and executing everything with pride. With this mindset and perseverance, I gained “Apprentice of the Year’’ Award from the Electrical Contractors’ Association and a Technology Award from Warwickshire College.
After 22 years of service with a wide scope of experience, I started full time as an approved electrician/test engineer in May 2017 with the Woodward Group which shares my core values to take pride in everything we do, with a “can-do’’ approach to every challenge.
Woodward Group has been very supportive in my development by giving me opportunities to share my engineering experience while inspiring me to pursue lifelong learning. Since joining Woodward Group, I gained my Level 4 – 2396 Design and Verification qualification in October, started a HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in July, and recently received a promotion to become one of Woodward’s Qualified Supervisors. I feel honoured to be part of the Woodward journey and look forward to contributing to our continued growth.

Hello, I’m Nathan and one of Woodward Group’s newest employees. I am a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). After starting my career as an electrician in the industrial and commercial sectors, I moved into maintenance roles for a number of large retailers gaining mechanical experience and completing my F-Gas qualifications enabling me to install and maintain a variety of AC, refrigeration and air handling units.
Early in my career, I was always interested in the High Voltage(HV) industry and through recent years gained my Senior Authorised Person (SAP) qualifications up to 11KV along with a working knowledge of 400KV.
I have worked on several power projects for the likes of WPD and Scottish Power including substations and overhead lines. My portfolio now has multi-utility experience and I’ve project managed water, gas and electric installs from new connections to private networks. Woodward Group is expanding into these areas and that is one of my reasons for wanting to work for such a dynamic company.
I joined Woodward Group for a new challenge where I can apply my strong technical and business capabilities and was impressed with how the business was growing and moving forward. As the company’s new Contract Manager, I believe my knowledge and experience will benefit the Woodward Group, allowing us to gain access to new markets as we develop the company further.
Nathan Cliff – Contracts Manager
Emergency Lighting is a legal requirement in premises across the UK, whether commercial offices, factory units, hotels or blocks of flats.
Anyone who has control over the premises and fire-safety systems like building owners, landlords, facility managers, building occupiers, is known as the “responsible person” for emergency lighting.
In an emergency situation, any failure of the main power supply can have a disastrous effect. Sudden darkness can pose threats and hazards to occupants of the property, either through physical injury or panic. Emergency lighting can be an effective and extremely useful solution as it is able to operate automatically and provide sufficient illumination for safe and efficient evacuation.
So many businesses and commercial sites neglect their emergency lighting as non-essential equipment, disregarding the fact that the lives of everyone in their premises, and around it is dependent on the effectiveness of their emergency systems.
Woodward Groups Fire & Security Division provides total solutions covering maintenance, upgrades, and installations of Emergency Lighting. Let us provide you with peace of mind that your business is fully compliant with the latest regulations by calling us on 01283 819379.
