Woodward Group has a long-standing working relationship with the Bombardier transportation site in Derby predominantly undertaking maintenance works and compliance testing for the company. This year, we completed the largest installation project, to date, with the Derby-based firm.
The project centred around the transformation of 2 assembly bays that were to be refurbished to suit the bespoke requirements of the Crossrail carriages. Involvement was required from steel workers, civil engineers, structure engineers, mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers with Woodward Group undertaking the electrical aspects of the project. Co-ordination was key throughout the project as timescales were short and with workers being undertaken below and above floor level, the planning was key. Woodward Group worked closely with Bombardier and the other contractors on site to ensure programmes were adhered to and designs were checked throughout to ensure errors were eliminated prior to installation.
The project began with the strip-out phase where we disconnected the existing installation whilst maintaining temporary power onto vital equipment. These works enabled other trades to progress during the project prior to our installation phase. Secondly, we installed approximately 360 metres of 400A Zucchini bus-bar trunking (180 metres per bay) with 95mm 4C XPLE parallel supplies from the LV switch room with all associated containment. The majority of the installation was undertaken at height with the use of MEWPS and all of our employees are IPAF accredited.
Upon completion of the ground works and support steels in place we split our team between the ground and high level works to ensure the project was pushed on and deadlines were met. High level works included new Eaton LED lighting scheme achieving an average of 500LUX throughout and an emergency lighting scheme compliant to BS5266:2016. Data cabling and heating supplies were also installed at high level. Low level works consisted of 400V and 110V distribution boards, 400V, 230V and 110V power feeding equipment specific to the assembly.
We successfully completed the project on time, within budget and all final testing and commissioning completed with no issues or alterations. This was undeniably confirmed when the NICEIC earmarked the works to be audited for our NICEIC Approved Contractor annual renewal. The inspection found that there were NO non-conformities.
The relationship between Bombardier and Woodward Group is at an all-time high especially as Woodward Group are looking to carry out the same works on an additional 3 assembly lines.
We would like to thank the Bombardier Team for their professionalism, co-operation and confidence to entrust Woodward Group with such critical projects.
