Cairo Monorail assembly line and testing bay
Woodward Group assisted Derby-based train maker Alstom (who recently acquired Bombardier) in its production setup of monorail trains for Egypt.
Bombardier was awarded the $4.5bn Cairo Monorail contract and the Derby production site was selected to design, build and test the monorails before exporting them to Egypt. The facility is the UK’s only monorail car production line.
The project was undertaken in two phases. Phase 1 was within the T2 building where the assembly production line was installed. The second phase was in T1 where the HV (high voltage) testing bay was installed.
Working closely with the onsite team, Woodward Group assisted with the design and provided a turnkey installation solution for the mechanical, electrical and fire aspects of the project. Works included the installation of LV panels, dedicated electrical supplies to production machinery, alterations to the high-level gas heating system, LED lighting upgrades and improvements to the addressable fire alarm system.
The first monorail unit was shipped to Egypt in June 2021 from the Alstom Derby site.
Woodward Group are still a household name on site and we look forward to undertaking more prestigious projects with Alstom.
